February 2008
Today was our first meeting for 2008. During show and tell we all saw some great Christmas decorations, some moved/wiggled, some sang and others, well… just looked good. Diane then spoke to us about mourning traditions, mourning jewelry and mourning clothes.
March 2008
What a great day. Members brought along their collectable T pots, T cozies’ and cups and saucers. The stories associated with these collectable items were fascinating. Our in-house competition featured dolls and or bears sitting in a cup and or saucer.
April 2008
Like professional auctioneers, Diane and Helen ran the annual auction at today’s meeting. Along with having lots of laughs, we all managed to bag a bargain or two.
May 2008
The history of cloth dolls was today's member education, and 'show and tell' was collectable soft toys. It’s always interesting to see what comes out of members cupboards and bought along to show and tell.
June 2008
Today's Member Education Program (MEP) was about the history and evolution of scissors. Following this we had show and tell on sewing implements. Members brought along their interesting old, new and unusual sewing tools.
July 2008
Miniatures was the theme for today's meeting. The in-house competition was an interesting display of miniatures - they were either made or collected by members.
August 2008
Sandra Wigzell, the editor of 'Bear Creations', attended
our meeting. She talked to us about making bears, and she showed us all sorts
of interesting implements to help us make a bear, traditional or fantasy. Sandra
was great to listen to.
Following Sandra’s talk we celebrated a special
event - Lily Bear married Gilbert Bear. Sandra officiated the wedding and
Guild members were bridesmaids.
Afterwards we all toasted Lilly and Gilbert’s wedding with a cuppa
and a piece of wedding cake.
September 2008
What a great show and tell we had today. We had all sorts of mechanical dolls.
There were antique and modern mechanical dolls, dolls that moved, dolls that
danced and dolls that sang. One member even bought along her 100 year old antique
doll.
October 2008
Our in house competition was 'D' for Doll Day. We had French
Dolls made by entrant, German Dolls made by entrant, Modern Dolls made by entrant,
and also collectable dolls. All the dolls were great and we were all entertained
listening to members stories about their dolls.
The Adventures of Lily and Gilbert
Lily and Gilbert are special bears. They have been handmade by a special
PDGSSD member.
Their adventures so far:
In February 2007 Gilbert was created and he began travelling around with
PDGSSD members. Each month he would be taken home by a different member.
For about
8 months he travelled to all parts of Australia. He now has a bag full
of memorabilia from his travels. Late in 2007 Gilbert with his bag of
memorabilia went to
live with a special PDGSSD member.
In February 2008 Lily was created and
she began her travels with PDGSSD members. Each month she has been taken
home by a different member. She
also has a
bag full of memorabilia from her travels.
In May 2008 Lily and Gilbert
met for the first time and they fell in love.
On Saturday 16th August PDGSSD
members were invited to a special event. Lily bear and Gilbert bear were
married. Members celebrated the
occasion with
a cup of tea and a piece of cake.
The Lily and Gilbert story is
to be continued.
Special Project
As a special project for 2007 some of the Guild members participated in a project organised through the Female Factory Historic Site in Tasmania by sewing and embroidering convict bonnets. The bonnets will form part of an exhibition intended as a tribute to approximately 25,000 women who were transported to 'parts unknown' and became the backbone of contemporary Australian society. The bonnets made by Guild members were on display at our Annual Doll and Bear Show in June 2007 and will be part of a much larger display during March 2008 on International Women's Day.
Charities for 2006,2007 and 2008
The Guild has chosen to support the Sutherland Early Support Service 'SESS' by contributing some of the proceeds from the Annual Doll and Bear Show.
At the Annual General Meeting members bring along a gift for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.
Previously members have made small dollies and knitted teddy bears for The Sutherland/St George Shire Aunties and Uncles Group and 'Enough is Enough' Group.
